TREAZZURE

Weeeeee!!!!!

Treazzure is a sixty-five foot luxury sailing yacht. This I learned from her larger than life captain/owner Capt. "Hollywood." My wife has always been afraid of water, but after meeting Captain Hollywood, all of her fears dissolved. We spent three glorious days aboard Treazzure, leaving and returning to St Thomas USVI, making ports of call on St John, Jost Van Dyke, Cooper Island, Virgin Gorda and Tortola, BVI. Treazzure's first mate, Danielle, is, to say the least, first class in every aspect, and entertaining to boot. This is the first time we have ever had a yacht (and her crew) entirely to ourselves. The food was heavenly and the booze...liberating. Thank you Captain and crew of Treazzure for making this a vacation well worth the time and the money. Weeeeeee!!!!!

Pirate Style in the US Virgin Islands!
Story by Edward Smith

Caibbean Sailing - Pirate Style!

Caribbean Cruising and Caribbean sailing was made for the Virgin Islands. It's easy to see why so many European nations and pirates plied these pristine islands and waters. The modern day Virgin Islands are home to the largest charter sailing fleets in the western hemisphere and St Thomas is the port of call for most Caribbean Cruise ships. On a recent trip to speak at a Caribbean conference on St. Thomas I was able to take a break after the seminar to relax, unwind and explore the great adventures that are available in the US Virgin Islands with my wife- Adella.

I surprised her with a day sail on board The Treazzure a 60 foot beauty. We were joined by two local island friends- Susan and Jimmy.

The captain of the ship is simply called “Hollywood” Joe. And with a name like that you can guess that he would be quite the character. Well you wouldn’t be wrong! Other than missing a eye patch and a peg leg you would have sworn he was one of those buccaneers you used to see in the movies- He definitely missed his era!

Captain Hollywood Joe Captain “Hollywood’s” father was a Pan Am Airline pilot that was based in the Caribbean, so the Captain grew up in the Virgin Islands. He came to know every inch of the waters in the area as he has spent over 30 years in the islands. He served a combat tour in Vietnam where he was wounded. He recovered in nearby Puerto Rico before returning home to restart his Caribbean Sailing business.

The adventure begins with a drive to Red Hook Harbor. As you make your way out by dinghy you are taken in by the beauty of all the boats in their slips or tied up in buoys. Giant Sea ferries plod across the bay as you pull up alongside the sleek and beautifully maintained 60 foot boat known as The Treazzure.

With Jimmy Buffet blaring, we're off! It is well appointed with a wide deck, comfortable seating areas and overhead canopies. Below deck is a living area and several bedrooms. Seagulls dance around the mast as we make our way out into the channel. The Captain fires up some Jimmy Buffet tunes and like Pirates of old we head out to sea.

Captain Joe unfurls the sails and the Treazzure snaps into speed. We are in Pillsbury Sound the two mile channel that separates St Thomas from the nature island of St John. The Sound is dotted with islands and rocky islets. It is not hard to imagine that this area housed the entire fleet of Columbus on his second voyage in 1493, or gold laden Spanish Galleons in the 1600’s trying to make a dash up the British Virgin Islands chain and hoped to avoid the English Admiral Drake or a horde of Dutch Pirates.

Waving at us in Cinnamon Bay Present day reality snaps you back into place as you draw close to St John and her picture-perfect-to-pretty-to-be-true bays and beaches. The water takes on all kinds of hues of colors and the sand has tinges of pink mixed into the sugar white beaches. I wave to the other anchoring boats as I make my way over board with Adella, Susan and Jimmy to do some snorkeling along the coast and reef of Cinnamon Bay. It is refreshing and invigorating and when we return we are greeted by a fantastic on-board meal prepared by our own Captain “Hollywood”. Giant Shrimp cocktails, salad, gourmet sandwiches, raw veggie dip and various cheeses!
We had a wonderful time
We had a wonderful time on our trip with Captain Joe on the boat "Treazzure".  We spent a week sailing first to St. John & then the BVI's.  Joe was a great Captain, experienced with the waters & wind. One of my sons & I sail, my other son does not, nor did the fourth person on our trip and ALL four of us had a wonderful experience.  The food was fabulous and the company was great.  Captain knows a lot about the islands, their history, pirate stories, & great places for snorkeling & exploring.  He was very flexible regarding where we wanted to go & do and was also honest & up-front when he thought the weather or winds were not appropriate.  The boat is absolutely beautiful and well accommodating, plenty to do on board if it rains.  I don't know how old your children are (mine are grown 25 & 27), but I told a friend of mine with a  younger family about it because I thought they would have a great time with Joe, he's very entertaining.   I definitely would recommend Captain Joe & the Treazzure.
