At the time, he was already an experienced sailing athlete, with a track record dating back to 1993, when he was only 11 years old. Over his sail racing career, he participated in over 200 regattas all around the world, from the Giraglia Rolex Cup to World Sailing Games, and also trained in the qualifiers for the 2008 Olympic Games in Bejing.
